35-40 year old turtle rescued this weekend

1970sslider

An elderly woman surrendered this lovely turtle to us over the weekend. Much to her surprise, the woman received this Red-eared Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) from a friend's will after they passed away. She has been living in a bucket for the past couple of months. This turtle was purchased sometime in the 1970's-- making her something like 35-40 years old! When properly cared for, sliders can reach nearly 50 years of age, and reach shell lengths of 10-12". Despite this, they are the bred by the millions and sold in pet shops (usually when they are only the size of a toonie) to unsuspecting animal lovers. She might just spend her golden turtle years within her current foster home instead of being moved around again (however, if there are any turtle-lovers out there who are interested in giving her a home, don't hesitate to apply!). Of course, she needs a name now that she's in the rescue: Any suggestions?
